Talis pater, talis filius: the role of discursive strategies, thematic narratives and ideology in Cosa Nostra
2018
The discursive analysis of criminal organizations’ family dynamics and ideological devices may provide important insights into the inner functioning of these groups. In this article, we describe and analyze a specific set of discursive strategies and the thematic narratives emerging from a TV interview with Giuseppe Riina, a member of Cosa Nostra and the son of one of the most important mafia bosses. Our analyses demonstrate the existence of recurring ideological devices such as reductionism, amoralism, familism, verticalism, normalism, victimism and religious relativism. The results are discussed in light of previous research that examines how discursive strategies and narratives may repre…
Paraconsistent logics, conventionalism and ontology
2004
Paraconsistent logics may be viewed as one of the last elements in a series of rapid developments in science in the 19th and early 20th c., triggered by the appearance of non-Euclidean geometries. The philosophy of conventionalism, which gave a metatheoretical framework to the basic changes involved, may also help in evaluating the truth import of (paraconsistent) logic and in determining its relation to ontology.

Uncertainty quantification on a spatial Markov-chain model for the progression of skin cancer
2019
AbstractA spatial Markov-chain model is formulated for the progression of skin cancer. The model is based on the division of the computational domain into nodal points, that can be in a binary state: either in ‘cancer state’ or in ‘non-cancer state’. The model assigns probabilities for the non-reversible transition from ‘non-cancer’ state to the ‘cancer state’ that depend on the states of the neighbouring nodes. The likelihood of transition further depends on the life burden intensity of the UV-rays that the skin is exposed to. The probabilistic nature of the process and the uncertainty in the input data is assessed by the use of Monte Carlo simulations. A good fit between experiments on mi…
Clausal coordination in Finnish Sign Language
2016
This paper deals with the coordination of clauses in Finnish Sign Language (FinSL). Building on conversational data, the paper first shows that linking in conjunctive coordination in FinSL is primarily asyndetic, whereas in adversative and disjunctive coordination FinSL prefers syndetic linking. Secondly, the paper investigates the nonmanual prosody of coordination: nonmanual activity is shown both to mark the juncture of the coordinand clauses and to draw their contours. Finally, the paper addresses certain forms of clausal coordination in FinSL that are sign language-specific. It is suggested that the sign language-specific properties of coordination are caused both by the fact that signe…
Positioning system for assembly and manufacturing tasks
2019
The paper presents a two-axis positioning system using asynchronous motors as actuation devices. Theuse of asynchronous motors reduces the overall cost of the system, while providing actuating torques superior to the ones provided by stepping motors. The system is controlled by mean of a programmable logic controller (PLC) and two voltage-frequency inverters fitted with motion control cards. In contrasts to a stepping motor system, which works in open loop mode, the proposed system uses closed loop control on each axis. The motion loop is closed by means of an incremental encoder.
Innovation and Entrepreneurial Ecosystems: Structure, Boundaries, and Dynamics
2019
Recognizing the broader dimensions of entrepreneurial and innovation activities, holistic and inclusive networked approaches pave the way to co-creation activities that are essential for achieving sustainability in food systems. Recent studies have started to deepen what are the critical enablers for creating thriving entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystems. Networks that include firms, institutions, and several other relevant stakeholders in knowledge spillovers enable to produce more social and economic value through co-creation processes. However, due to the unique complexity within ecosystems, there is no standardized framework or strategy to develop entrepreneurial or innovation ecos…
Nanoring as logic gate and memory mass device
2015
We study the application of one nanoring driven by a laser field in different states of polarization in logic circuits. In particular we show that assigning boolean values to different state of the incident laser field and to the emitted signals, we can create logic gates such as OR, XOR and AND. we also show the possibility to make logic circuits such as half-adder and full-adder using one and two nanoring respectively. Using two nanorings we made tho Toffoli gate. Finally we use the final angular momentum acquired by the eelctron to store information and hence show the possibility to use and array of nanorings as a mass device.
Expert control of DO in the aerobic reactor of an activated sludge process
2001
Abstract An expert control structure is proposed for the control of dissolved oxygen (DO) in a Nitrification Denitrification Biological Excess Phosphorus Removal (NDBEPR) plant to account for the several processes that are influenced by the DO concentration in the aerator. In the scheme a supervisory fuzzy controller determines the set point of an inner DO control loop where an Adaptive Robust Generic Model Control (ARGMC) controller is used. The fuzzy supervisory control has a hierarchical structure. Off-line measurements of biological parameters of influent and effluent streams can be used to periodically update the set points of the fuzzy controllers. The complete control scheme has been…
Sudoku – A Language Description Case Study
2009
A complete language description includes the structure as well as constraints, textual representation, graphical representation, and behaviour (transformation and execution). As a case study in language description, we consider Sudoku as a language, where a Sudoku puzzle is an instance of the language. Thus we are able to apply meta-model-based technologies for the creation of a language description for Sudoku, including correctness checking of a puzzle, and solving strategies. We identify what has to be expressed and how this can be done with the technology available today.
